“Drawing nr671” Kabelvåg 01.06.23
My shoulder is out of sorts. I can draw just fine but I cannot use the computer at my desk. So I am semi-horizontal. I should have a walk. It was snowing today.
I was pleased with drawing nr670. So I did it again. Only it is drawing nr671. Again, drawn on a sheet of paper taped with 4 pieces of yellow tape to a drawing board made of spruce. I use a fountain pen and a ruler. 24 layers, 12 vertical and 12 horizontal. This time I introduced 3 drops of magenta in the horizontal layers. The other 21 layers are made with a yellow-orange ink, 21 drops. I believe it is a slight improvement over drawing nr670, a dissonance of pink at the top. I lost something you might regard, but I also gained something other. I think it is better that I did it than not do it at all. There are of course many things that are a lot more useful to do. It is my lot and I am happy I can do it.
The sun came out and the snow melted away. We had a long walk. I lost a plastic bottle of ketchup on the pavement. It was horrible. So I went the short walk home and fetched in total, 3 buckets of water to wash the ketchup into the ocean or just about. It was lovely to do something outdoors. I must spend more time outdoors.
This small drawing is insignificant. It is made in a meditative approximation of a vacuum. My thought is that the method I employ is relevant to some. Personally it was necessary to take a step away from the gestural. This is why I employ a ruler to draw the lines. I call it a supergesture as it takes a step away from the direct emotional gesture a liberal line may be. The total drawing is still a gesture, the method, supergestural. A method without direct expressive content. A singular vertical or horizontal line might be ekspressive, even when employing a ruler. The repetition drowns such notions.
I am implying a series of drawings now. But I will not make a decision. It can come if I will. There might be divergent ideas more necessary in the moment I decide to do them. I allow for that. Still, if it feels ok to continue, I will. I should mention some ideas in case I diverge. I want to make 1:1 replicas for my tape frames, then install series. The tape frame is a simple mounting utensil for paperwork. It is a blind frame made of plywood and 4 pieces of wood on the back. The paperwork is mounted on the front with a sheet of polycarbonate on top. Then there is tape and a sealing strip to hold it together on the edges. The tapeframe allows for close installation of drawings and prints. This way I can make a larger work consisting of many smaller pieces perhaps connected by some rationale. Or disparate. Yet close together in a cluster, like pixels.
